The Guyana Zoological Park lies within the Botanical Gardens on Vlissengen Road and opened in 1952. It keeps the wildlife of Guyana's interior: the jaguar, ocelot and other cats, the tapir, giant otters, caimans, snakes and a large collection of birds including the harpy eagle and macaws. Manatees swim in the ponds by the entrance. It is a small zoo and the enclosures are old, but it is the one place in the city to see the animals of the rainforest, and early morning is the time to visit.
