The Georgetown Lighthouse stands at the northern end of Water Street in Kingston, where the Demerara River meets the Atlantic. The present tower, an octagonal brick structure a little over 100 feet high, was completed in 1830 and replaced a wooden lighthouse put up in 1817. Its red and white vertical stripes make it one of the most recognisable structures in the city.

It is a working light, maintained by the Maritime Administration Department, and marks the approach to the port of Georgetown and the Demerara Harbour.

The lighthouse is a short walk from the Umana Yana and the seawall, which makes Kingston the easiest part of the city to explore on foot. Tours of the tower are occasionally arranged; check with the Maritime Administration Department before visiting if you hope to climb it.
