- Paved walkway on top of the wall; steps at most access points
Georgetown sits a little below the level of the sea, and the seawall along its northern edge is the city's first line of defence against the Atlantic. The Kingston stretch, from the mouth of the Demerara eastwards, is also the city's promenade.
The oldest sections of concrete sea defence here date from the mid-nineteenth century, with the wall rebuilt and raised many times since. Along the top runs the walkway where Georgetown comes to walk, run, sit and talk in the evening, and where the whole city seems to gather on Easter Monday to fly kites. Food and drink vendors set up along the road behind the wall.
At high tide the waves break against the wall; at low tide the mudflats stretch out and wading birds feed on them. Sunset is the time to come. The Lighthouse and the Umana Yana are a few minutes' walk away.
