The Guyana National Museum on North Road traces its origins to the collections of the Royal Agricultural and Commercial Society in the nineteenth century, which made it one of the oldest museums in the Caribbean region. The original building and much of its collection were lost in the great fire of 1945, and the museum was rebuilt and reopened in the early 1950s.

The ground floor is given over to natural history: a model of the giant sloth, mounted birds, insects and the animals of the rainforest and the savannahs. Upstairs the displays cover the peoples of Guyana, its Indigenous heritage, the colonial period and the road to independence, along with a model of the Georgetown of a century ago.

The Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, which holds the country's Indigenous collections, is a few minutes' walk away on Main Street, and St George's Cathedral is just across the road.
